Before Vogue, how did you find out the styles of the day? How about when you live across the ocean from the style hub? In the 1820s, American women used "fashion dolls" to get their fashion advice. They would send their fashion doll to Europe to a designer of their choice and when it arrived, the designer would clothe it in the latest styles of the day. The designer would ship it back to the owner, who would, in turn, send it to their dressmaker. Pretty cool, eh?

"These dolls were handed from household to household after the style of dress was copied. When the styles become outmoded, they became toys for children, hence very few survived, if any."
