Another Amazing Film Critic: Scott Weinberg

"Everyone in online journalism knows and loves Philadelphia native Scott Weinberg. Like his hometown, Weinberg's passion for movies engenders a feeling of fraternal, film-geek kinship...and his well-observed film reviews are as satisfying as a cheese steak from Pat's King of Steaks. (Or Geno's. You choose.)"

Rotten Tomatoes presents another in their interesting series of interviews with film critics.

When the Kids Aren't Around...

Sure, there are numerous Christmas classics and most boast a G or PG rating so they're appropriate for family viewing. There are several Christmas films that aren't so appropriate for the kids, but are worth watching just the same. Check out Cinematical's Seven Best R-Rated Christmas Movies.

More Cool Bar Tricks

Earlier, I posted a link to an article about how to hustle free drinks. Well, the same gentleman has posted a sort of continuation of the same here. He says, "And these ones are really easy to learn, even my dear old mom could do them." I have yet to master a couple.

Oh yeah, baby!

History's Hit Job on Thomas Paine

When we hear the term "founding father," we generally think of George Washington (you know, first in the hearts of his countrymen), Ben Franklin and the like. Who we generally DON'T think of is the incredible Thomas Paine. Not only did he spur the colonies on to patriotism and victory in the Revolution, but was advocating for universal suffrage (including blacks and women) by 1795. He also had several other progressive ideas.

Virgins and Vandals

Slate's William Saletan explores some recent findings and their implications. One of the more prominent questions the article draws attention to is whether teen sex can prevent delinquency. What do you think? Do you know from experience? After you read the article, see what the readers over at Fark have to say.

The History of the...

"For some it is a daily stranglehold, a small symbol of oppression pulled tight around the neck; the noose of the working man. For the jaunty young rock star, it is a nod to times past when men knew how to dress and spent a bit more time on their “toilette”. Until the 1960’s, it was de-rigor in the workplace. That least utilitarian piece of menswear."

What is it?
The tie, of course.

The Brit List

"With a writers strike set to start Monday, high-quality scripts that have already been completed are suddenly a hot commodity. In fact, let's be honest: they probably don't even have to be high-quality. Coincidentally -- and it is just a coincidence -- a list of well-regarded screenplays by non-American writers has begun to circulate, and Variety reports that it's getting some attention in Hollywood."

In Britian, a list has been compiled of the best scripts that haven't been made. So, the article asks, with the shortage of US writers (as a result of the strike), will producers and studios turn to UK writers?

The Relentless Pursuit of Dejection

I've seen these posters all over the Internet, but for the definitive source visit the Despair, Inc. website.
They explain their mission:

"A company that would create dissatisfied customers in the process of exploiting demoralized employees while selling overpriced and ineffective products to remediate the problems caused by the very process itself.

A company that would become the bold embodiment of every shortcoming rife within corporate America. A business dictatorship with draconian tendencies. A company grossly obsessed with margins. A peddler of absurdly embellished corporate publicity.

It began with one man's dream.

And now that dream has come true. As bad dreams so often do."

History Buff

Before Vogue, how did you find out the styles of the day? How about when you live across the ocean from the style hub? In the 1820s, American women used "fashion dolls" to get their fashion advice. They would send their fashion doll to Europe to a designer of their choice and when it arrived, the designer would clothe it in the latest styles of the day. The designer would ship it back to the owner, who would, in turn, send it to their dressmaker. Pretty cool, eh?

"These dolls were handed from household to household after the style of dress was copied. When the styles become outmoded, they became toys for children, hence very few survived, if any."

To learn more about fashion dolls and how they evolved into mannequins, you can read this [outdated] article: http://www.fashionwindows.com/mannequin_history/025earlymannequins.asp

The combination "ough" can be pronounced in nine different

Have a few minutes? A popular hack that never gets old! This project will yield a completely useless clock, but it will provide a great conversation starter and novelty piece. I think the best place for one of these would be in a classroom...
